Cities and Special Districts
The Cities and Special Districts Branch assists officials across Kentucky in meeting the various regulatory requirements for budget and financial reporting. The Branch also provides technical assistance for a variety of issues from special purpose government creation, to basic guidance in budget and accounting practices.
With over 400 Cities and 1300 Special Districts, the services offered by the Cities and Special Districts Branch encompass three main categories:
Financial Reporting and Record Keeping
- Preparation, distribution, and collection of numerous budget and financial reporting documents required by state statute.
- Data collection and aggregation of key financial trends, including annually providing data to the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Advising the State Local Finance Officer of reporting compliance and ensuring timely filing of reports to DLG.
- Providing an official repository of local government financial and contact data as required by statute.
Special Districts
- Distribute, collect, and maintain the official records of special purpose governments in Kentucky, including creation documents, contact information, and annual financial data (uniform financial reports and annual budgets).
- Provide advice and technical assistance on the creation or dissolution of special purpose governments.
